Below are some of the key highlights from the 2023 Hertford County Corn Production meeting to consider as corn planting draws near.

Uniform Emergence & Weather Forecast early stages emergence Studies have shown that when corn emergences uniformly within the same day versus over the next three days, there can be a yield difference of an average of 50 bushels per acre. With a future price of $6.57, uniform emergence could lead to a $328.50 per acre difference.

Planting into warm soil temperatures with the goal of accumulating 40-50 GDD’s over the next four to five days and having less than 2 inches of rain for the week following planting is key. The North Carolina State Climate Office developed a GDD Calculator Tool to help with determining this figure depending upon your area. Below is an example from the tool for Murfreesboro, NC if planting on March 31, 2023. Early planting could be critical this year, as we have shifted from a La Nina to El Nino weather pattern. See Dr. Heiniger’s slide below about best planting dates to avoid drought stress (early April planting date best in 2023).
