Collapse ▲Tobacco Associates Export Promotion Check-Off Referendum has been rescheduled from the original 2/19/25 date due to upcoming inclement weather. The new voting date will be Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Hertford County Center.
From Dr. Matthew Vann – Associate Professor & Tobacco Extension Specialist
I wanted to share some information that pertains to the winter weather forecast for this Wednesday and (maybe) Thursday. Below are a few things to keep in mind:
1.) It is yet unknown what weather we can expect, but it mostly looks like a mix of snow in the Triangle, ice east of Raleigh, and snow points west. This can change, but it looks as though this is a solid generalization.
2.) Regardless of what happens, producers need to focus on keeping greenhouses heated to promote the melting of frozen precipitation. Even if greenhouses are empty! As snow and/or ice begin to accumulate, the structural integrity of greenhouses begins to compromise. As a grower, I’d rather spend money on heating instead of trying to build a greenhouse at this time of year.
3.) Make sure you have standby power for greenhouses, as electricity will be needed to run the heaters and keep the inflation fans running. The inflation fans keep the plastic roof inflated, thus helping to prevent the material depression and accumulation of snow/ice. Keeping the inflation fan running may be one of the most critical pieces to the event ahead of us.
4.) If greenhouses have been seeded, growers really need to watch the thermometers to ensure temperatures stay above 55 degrees. This will obviously help with melting but it will also keep the interior of the house(s) warm enough to avoid freezing. If seeds have NOT germinated, I’d try to keep the interior temperature above 60 degrees as best one can. Ideally the temperature should be closer to 68 degrees, BUT that may be more difficult given how cold it is likely to be. Growers should also monitor humidity in the greenhouse, and use the ventilation fans as needed to exhaust moist air. The goal here should be to prevent moisture condensation inside the greenhouse.

TA’s programs stimulate export demand for all U.S.-produced flue-cured tobacco. Given the continuous decline in the domestic market, maintaining and expanding the export market is vital to our industry’s future. Please make every effort to attend the 78th Annual Meeting and support the export promotion initiatives of Tobacco Associates.
